Essiac tea is an excellent option if you’re showing signs of a congested lymphatic system, which can present as: lethargy, tiredness, headaches, poor circulation and blood quality, skin issues and lack of vitality. Our blend contains: Soursop, sheep sorrel, turkey rhubarb, burdock root, dandelion root, cleavers and slippery elm bark.

Decoction means “to boil down or away.” A decoction is a method in which rough plant parts, such as roots, bark, stems, and seeds, are placed in a pot with cold water, covered, and slowly brought to a boil. Placing the plant in cold water is essential because tougher plant parts are high in albumin, a protein which needs to be extracted from the cells slowly as the water temperature increases. If you put these plants in hot water, the albuminous matter in the plant cells coagulate and can prevent other constituents from leaving the plant cells, potentially limiting the potency of the extract.

Preparing the Decoction:

  • Place the muslin pouch of herbs and one gallon (128oz) of distilled water into a stainless steel or enamel pot.

  • Bring to a boil and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes.

  • Turn off the heat, cover with a lid and let it sit out overnight

  • The next morning, reheat and boil for an additional 10-15 minutes.

  • Let it cool to room temperature, remove pouch, and add liquid into a jar with a good seal and refrigerate.

  • Add 2-3 TBSP of the decoction to at least 4oz of hot water, sweeten as desired.

More about each herb:

Sheep sorrel (Rumex acetosella) contains anthraquinones and oxalates. Oxalic acid is a contributing factor to the anti-tumor and anti-cancer aspects of the herb.  The mechanisms of action of this herb are anthraquinones including emodin, rhein, and physcion stimulate peristalsis and increase secretion of mucous and water into the intestines. They are also considered to be antioxidant and free radical scavengers. Turkey rhubarb root (rheum palmatum) has been used as a herbal tea as a cancer treatment, primarily for prostate cancer, but also for breast cancer. Turkey rhubarb is a strong liver cleanser. The acidic contents include gallic, malic, oxalis and tannic acids. Dandelion root stimulates bile production which helps the liver’s detoxification process.  In turn, helps w/natural removal of estrogen from the body via your normal excretory processes. Burdock root is one of the herbs for estrogen dominance that works as a diuretic, helping to get rid of any excess estrogen in your body through natural elimination processes. Burdock root is also an extremely powerful blood purifier. Burdock contains phosphorus, selenium & potassium. The principle ingredient is called inulin. Inulin strengthens vital organs. It is an immune modulator that can enhance white blood cell activity. Soursop leaves have shown potential in fighting cancer, boosting immunity, great for regulating diabetes, inhibits bacteria, improves skin condition, helps with eczema and other skin problems. Slippery elm bark is well known for its highly nutritive qualities. It helps in revitalizing a debilitated system. It contains vitamins A, B complex, C, K, and P, and is high in minerals and gallic acids. It is a demulcent rich in mucilage and this quality reduces irritation and sensitivity to acids. Cleavers works as a solvent, helping to ease congestion and move lymph fluids through the lymphatic system so it flows better.
